A 55 gallon is a bit on the small side for cichlids, BUT it also depends on what you are planning to get. Keep in mind that these fish are very aggressive and very dirty, I siphoned my tank 2 times a week and there is so much gunk. 2 times a week might be on the more lazy side for some people but my fish have been breeding so it has to be working.
A 55 will work if you are getting smaller fish, but in any case I would overstock it with cichlids so the top boss will even out its aggression to everyone not just one fish. You can either put alot of rocks so they have lots of places to hide from the boss, or you can put rocks in there but not make caves, so they have not reason to fight over caves. Its one extreme or the other. I personally changed my tank to less caves so i can see them better cause they like to hide alot.
If I where you and can start over with a 55 i would get
Pseudotropheus saulosi - the males are Blue with dark stripes and the females are solid yellow. Get like 12 or so because they only get to 3-4 inches and overstocking is a plus. Blue and yellow look nice together.
and or
Pseudotropheus yellow tail acei - they get bigger then the last one but they are pretty mild and like to swim in the top half of the tank. they are dark blue to purple with yellow tails. these two species can interbreed but if you have a good ratio between the two it should be okay.

I believe this is more of a question to put ideas into your head. I got some great ones, just remember they can’t all be together.
Electric yellow Cichlids
Jack Dempsey
And more
