Sam asked:
I have a 10 gallon tank, bare. And I want one cichlid to put in it. What cichlid is smallish and can fit in a 10 gallon tank. But still be stunning to look at. Perhaps an african? That can have soft water and is relatively easy to care for. But it has to be colorful and pretty. Like a blue electric or a Jack Demsey. Only smaller. Thanks in advance.
excluding red parrots.

Well, all I can think of is 1 angelfish if the tank is at least 18 inches high, if it is not…then 2 rainbow ram cichlids! They get about 4 inches and are VERY colorful!

about the only cichlids that will do ok in a 10 gallon are kribenisi or rams

In a 10 gallon tank, there is NO way you’d want to try an 8″ fish… I would hesitate to put anything longer than 3″ in such a tank! Your only real choices would be a pair of Shell Dwellers, which aren’t terribly colorful, but make up for it in personality. You could fit a pair of Rams or smaller Apisto species in their, but you would REALLY be pushing it– any other fish in the tank would definitely suffer. I would avoid Kribs as they get a fair bit larger than Rams, and will need considerably more space.
