What can i do for my fish. African Cichlid?

torresraulg wants to know:

So i have had this fish for two years now. She had babies maybe more than twice(not sure). I woke up today and she was all bruised up. A whole side seemed she had scrapped herself against something or maybe the other fish beat her up really bad. She could barely move. I put her on a breeding net so she could be isolated from the rest.(will try to buy a hospital tank today). Question is: Do you know of something else I should do? Something so she can heal or make her feel better. I’ve dealt with some diseases before, but never with injuries… pls help.

They make a medication for fish with injuries. it comes in a round blue body and is good for wounds. it can be bought at walmart and local pet stores

That medicine is called Melafix, and it works great. My oscars have had many scrapes & cuts, and it always healed them.

You should really get her in the hospital tank though, since there is no reason to dose all of the fish with the Melafix. And it is recommended that you remove the carbon from the filter in with the medicine.

Wal-Mart does usually have it here, but if your wal-mart doesn’t, a pet store should.

    Good luck.

Melafix would help heal up any scrapes or damage to her fins so I would recommend using it and it should be fine with any other fish in the tank as it’s not a very strong medicine and you should start seeing results within a few days of daily dosing.

I would recommend carrying out a water change and then dosing it for 7 days before doing another water change to get maximum effect. Also removing any carbon in your filter will help

You can also make use of a bucket and give small 15-20 minute isolation treatments of Meth Blue which will help with some healing along the site of damage and increase the O2 uptake in the body. Just use the same tank water, don’t use tap as there is likely going to be some hardness and pH differentials.

What might be worth you time is to investigate a bit why this happend also. What is the total stock in what footprint? Are there multiple females? Most but not all African cichlid species usually need to be in harem type settings so if this is just a male female pair, this might be in part some of the problem. Even though this pair may have been working for 2 years now, it’s possible wherever she was trying to retreat from the male’s aggression got taken and had no where to hide. Addition of other females of the species can help divert the males attention on her.
