My beta does this too, and I took him to a fish doc and the doc say hes looking for food and sometimes fishes hide there own food sometimes in those rocks. These fishes are real smart.

He’s clearly been watching Finding Nemo and thus wants to escape from the bowl and pursue a more liberated existence.

Tryin to find his lost burried treasure. By this I mean they hide there food and come back for it. And if it was a female it would sometimes do this before having babies. But you have a male so its looking for some grub

    africans do that

To keep him from digging to deep (a must if you have an undergravel filter) get a piece of nylon (**NOT STEEL**) screen and burry it under 1/2 to 1″ of gravel -

I did and it worked great

Mine does that too, but only in one spot he kind of makes that his home it is right under a peice of drift wood! ^_^!!! so I guess that is normal

  7. Nicky Says:

It is probably because the fish is pregnant and making a nest. If it’s a male, it may be going into a hibernation state they go into.

It could be that he is creating an area for breeding. But if these are Lake Mabuna Africans (Pseudos) than you have to understand that in their normal Lake environment they also do this to create territory and places to sleep. Really what is needed to be known here is

    1. The size of your tank
    2. What else is in there
    3. What substrate are you using
