It’s Central American and you are right. African species prefer a much harder water while Central and S. American want a soft water. While you can raise Central and S. American fish in hard water (mine is 8.1) especially convicts, it is not their best environment. Shortens their lives and the chances of breeding to a normal size is small.

Common names can sometimes refer to more than one species, but the fish I know as the Convict Cichlid (black convict and pink convict are some of its color varieties), Amatitlania nigrofasciata (although you will also see it listed as Archocentrus nigrofasciatus and several older names), is not from Africa or South America, it is from Central America. Its native range is roughly from Guatemala to Costa Rica.
I would be very careful about trying to combine convict cichlids with any African cichlids.
