How many african cichlids would you put in a 30 gallon tank?

Stephanie asked:

They are 1-1.5 inches long a piece. I want to make sure I have enough room for when they grow.

oh..for a second i thought you meant african childs….I was like…WHAT!!!!!! (racsist)** but now i know what you are talking about lol

They can get quite large.Usually the ratio is 2 gal.per fish, but I don’t think this would apply here. Are they aggressive? Too many anything in the same enviroment can cause problems.Maybe 10?

4-5 because if they are to compacted they will become very aggressive and probably kill each other..

Well its impossible to give a correct answer to this question without knowing what species of African Cichlid and, if possible, the ratio of male/females. There are hundreds of African Cichlids, including hybrids, which have a range to temperaments and needs and yours may well still have some substantial growing to do. So what do you have?

Well what cat said is usually the first thing I mention because saying you have African cichlids in your tank now really doesn’t say much. In addition to what cat asked, you should know that even if you have a group of them now, are they all the same species? Just being an African cichlid doesn’t make it ok to group them in groups just because they are Africans, when in fact there are a good deal of groupings that are highly incompatible on many levels. Without trying to offend you, if you do not know what species you have, you shouldn’t have gotten them, and it’s in your best interest to start there, knowing just what you have now, before looking at how many. Most species would have room to grow in a 30 gallon footprint, but I’d be more worried about what I have then how many right now.
