about six or seven with alot (and i meen alot) of hiding places. so your gonna be spending at least 50 dollars on slate.

There are hundreds of different species of “African Cichlids”.
Some max out at 1 inch, some at 3 ft.
You need to be a little more specific on the species you are interested in.
There are litterly hundreds of different stocking list you can put together.

With Africans, it’s not so much about how many, but how many in the right ratios. While not all Africans need this, as a general guideline, try to keep only 1 male of a species, and about 3-4 females of that same species. In a 46, you could have multiple species, but in terms of Mbuna types, I wouldn’t go more then 2 and get them as different looks. Those that have similiar looks and colors, are likely to trigger aggression among the males, as well as increase the potential they could hybridize, which is a bad thing.
You could get 2 Mbuna types and 2 in combination of Peacocks and/or Haps. Use dual filtration as well. I know you have 1 filter that is slightly over the tank capacity, but having even a second smaller one added on will help you out even more.
