Me asked:
We had a Tiger Oscar that passed away after many years of being a huge (and I mean huge) part of our family. We want to start another big fish tank with cichlids, but don’t want them to get as big as oscars get.

It really depends on how big your tank is. I have an african cichlid, and he’s been the same size for over a year. The tank is a 10 gallon, and he’s about 4 inches long. Get a bigger tank for a bigger fish, that’s what I’ve always known. Hope that helps!!

Fish get as big as their environment if they live long enough. If you want them to stay small, get a big enough environment that way they don’t feel too crowded, but small enough to where they wont get too big. Don’t overfeed either, this helps in the growing process. Hope this helped!

African cichlids encompass a huge range of fish. They are, fully grown, anywhere from less then an inch to over two feet long! You need to do some reading up on these fish and learn about them because their needs and behaviors can be quite different too, and they can be as incompatible as they can be compatible. The best place I know of for cichlids is.
Mbuna range from 3″ to 10″, but most grow to about 5″.
Haplochromines range from 4″ to 30″, but most grow to about 7-10″.
Shelldwellers range from half an inch to a few inches long.
The more common rock dwellers of Tanganyika grow to about 4-6″ long.
Frontosa grow to about 10-12″ long.
Tropheus grow to about 5-6″ long.
Kribensis grow to 3″ long
When are people going to stop passing this ‘fish growing to their environment’ bull on to unsuspecting people? Stunting a fishes life and size does not qualify as ‘growing to the tank size’. You get a tank appropriate to the adult fish, or a fish who’s adult size is appropriate to thte tank or you are nothing but an irresponsible fish keeper, slightly selfish and cruel.
