Haha! You cant stop convicts from breeding, believe me, you will be over run with soon enough. They need flat smooth surfaces to breed on, so either a plant pot like the person above said, or they will dig a whole in the gravel and lay the eggs on the glass on the bottom. Or on the glass at the back of the tank. They are REALLY good parents, really terrotorial, so be careful, you could end up with a tank full of convicts and just other dead fish.
In a word, no, you dont need breeding grass. Just feed them nice stuff, lots of it, and ket them pair up naturally, and you will be over run soon, like I said.
No. Convicts are the easiest cichlid to breed. They have adhesive eggs and usually breed in a small depression created in the tank. They will use all sorts of areas. A broken flower pot used to make a cave, one turned upside down with a hole in it and a variety of other locations. Your biggest problem in a 29 gallon tank is what to do with the other fish when the convicts breed. They may decide that the entire tank is their territory and kill the other fish. You should prepare for this by setting up a temporary tank for everyone except the pair. The eggs are adhesive, they hatch in about 5 days and the fry take BABY brine shrimp without a problem. With all of that said I like having plants in all of my tanks and feel it helps provide new born fry with microscopic foods they can feed on all day long. I find it really helps all species though it is not necessary. Enjoy the fry and give some to friends or a starter for others to join us in this great hobby.
Nope, convicts will breed pretty much breed anywhere. Although they do favor drift wood, smooth stones or flat rocks to lay their eggs on. Caves make them happy.

I think it is unnecessary as convicts are very good parents who will raise the fry but some plastic plant or hiding spots would be a good idea.
