I have mostly African Cichlids. I know you can give them oranges, lettuce, and cucumbers, but they are all messy. What else can I give them that will provide vitamin c and wont be messy?

I have a 55 gallon freshwater tank that has been established for approximately 2 months. I recently added very finely crushed coral for my substrate and am planning on housing the tank with a few different African Cichlids.

1) Can I add plants to my tank using what I have?

2) Is it time consuming? (More than a couple of hours a week)

3) What is CO2 Fertilization? I’ve read to do this in some different literature I’ve found. Does any know if it is costly? (More than $20 a month.)

I just got rid of all my old gravel and I’d like to add the pretty white sand to my tank, but all of the sand options say marine on them. Are they still safe to use in my freshwater tank with african cichlids + 2 plecos? Or if not, can anyone recommend any fine grain substrate that would look similar to sand for my tank? I just dont want the chunky, large rocks anymore. Thanks.
