Toniiiiiiii wants to know:
I have two African Cichlids, one is orange and the other light blue. The orange cichlid has little black specks, they’re tiny, on his tail and side. He also has a lot of them on one side of his mouth, it looks like a splotch, but when you look closely you can see its a bunch of black specks. He didn’t have them a week ago, they just dort of showed up one day. Does anybody know what the little specks could be? Are they harmful? None of my other fish have them. Is there anything I can try to get rid of the spots?

My orange cichlid also has this white dot on its tail. It’s been there since I got it and I can never decied if it is normal or not. None of my other fish have that either.
What could these this be? Is there anything I can do about it?

Your Cichlids are fine; no matter what colr spot it has, it is healthy…I hope that works!

The white dot is more then likely what is known as egg spots. Occaisonally, egg spots are an indicator this is a male fish, only it’s inconsistant to say that positively. The black ones, I’m not sure, but it would go a long way to help if you could post pictures of that.
Tks Ed. It’s the same with your answers as well honestly. You always find something I’d miss and the asker gets the best help. I’m really curious to what these spots look like. I hope it’s not an ammonia burn spot in a new tank. I’m also wondering if this might not be some kind of worm. If I can’t find it, I’m gonna pass this over to copperhead.

Jon is right like usual, he wouldn’t steer you wrong. The white spots are egg spots and I too am not sure if this is a sign of gender, but I know that many of mine have them, along with many that I see in the pet stores. It is nothing to worry about.
The black spots are probably something to worry about. It would help with pictures of this, it is very hard to diagnose a fish just by description.

hmm, i’m kinda wondering what the name of this cichlid is
because there is a good possibity that it’s one of these cichlids where a male changes his color when growing into juvenile stage
as exampley a blue kenyii will change into yellowish
or an auratus will change from yellow into blackish/blueish
i’m experiencing that myself right now, that’s how i can tell you that that is a possibility
as for the white spot, it’s called a false eggspot
here are example cichlids
hope that helps
Good luck
