Sand or gravel will be a good substrate. Sand is often a pain since it can build up toxic pockets that can kill your fish when stirred up. However, your Mbunas will like the sand much more since it’s easier to kick around. For hiding spots, Texas Holey rock is awesome like I said in your other question.

A small sized gravel mixed with Florida crushed coral. Helps keep the Ph up and makes the colors of the fish stand out. I have set up customer tanks and used straight crushed coral. For me I make a 50/50 mix, but what ever works for you, start with the crushed coral and start mixing in the gravel. as for decorations, that depends on what variety you have. Peacocks are open water swimmers and only need enough shelter to retreat or settle for the night. Rock dwellers well… as much rock as you can stand, the more holes, crevices, shelves, blinds ect…. the happier the rock dwellers will be.
