40 gallon African cichlid tank?

.:*JimBOB*:. wants to know:

I have a 3 ft by 1.5 ft by 1 ft tank… 40 gallons approx. Can I put 2 electric yellows, 2 red jewels, and 2 electric blue johannis in it? Are they compatible?

rule of thumb 1 inch of fish per gallon, those are primarily dwarf cichlids and will not exceed 4-6 inches. They should get along, but have plenty of rocks and hiding places, some can be more aggressive then others. I have 4 cichlid tanks, my favs are the tangynikan varieties, especially the calvus’ pricey but they are chill. I have electic yellow and kenyi hybrides as well that I bred from another tank. Almost look like acai with faint stripes.

hey sir fish guy, I have a few frontosas, but one has been off in the corner at the water linewith it’s top fin above water, chases any fish away that gets to close. any suggestions.

well this is one of those questions i have a hard to answering for my customers. in theory no, but theories blow haha. look this is my best recommendation for anyone who do african cichlid tanks. keep the following in mind: they are aggressive, highly territorial, and when they pair off with a mate they can get even more aggressive to the community as a whole.

but with the size of your tank it should be alright just provide it with a lot of hiding places and i mean a lot, plenty of caves if you can plus when arranging your decorations keep in mind to try to build in the middle of the tank so that the fish can go front in the middle to the side and importantly to the back that opens up more space to hide and get away from the other fish.

the only problem i see in your tank is that one of the species of fish u have pair off and push everyone away. also givin that you only have two of each specie you run into the issue that you might have two of the same sex and if they are males well thats when all hell brakes loose.

just keep a close on your fish, keep up with good water conditions, and avoid avoid avoid feeding live food (for african cichlids are mainly herbivores and can not digest animal protein, so if need be feed vegetable protein i.e spiralina enriched flakes)

i hope this helps i no its a bit vague but cichlid tanks can really be based on luck

so best of luck and happy hunting
